Amber

After the work week following my arrest, things seemed to be getting back to normal, almost as if nothing had ever happened. But waking up on that Saturday to see Dad off to work, as usual, I listened as he told me that instead, we were taking a little drive together.

The thought was unexpected but not unwanted. We hadn’t driven very far before. To my surprise, I realized that there was a method behind this outing, a purpose stronger than just some casual early morning sightseeing. Dad turned off the main road, and I watched out the window as the community college entrance flashed past. I was too confused to even say a word.

“You wanted to check it out, so here you go, Amber. We have an appointment with the head of administration. She should be able to answer any questions that you might have.”

“Dad… What do you mean? We talked about this being a year or two from now, not today. We agreed that there’s no point in seeing about starting until we have enough saved for a transfer afterward. I can get the first-year classes taken care of here, but even taking less than a full load, that will only be, at most, three semesters. I could double up on work over that time and make enough for maybe another fifteen hours of tuition. However, most of the courses I’d be taking at the state school also have three to five hour a week labs that go with them and another one to three hours of recitation. With what it will cost just to be there in food, books, and housing… Dad, there’s no way that I can just take two classes and their labs to justify being there for a full semester.”

He nodded and parked. “I know that’s what we said. And that’s something we can speak more about, but I think it’s time you talked it over with these people instead of just me and your mom. They’ll tell you exactly what you have to do to get things going here, and I bet you that they’ll have something to say about helping you make that later transition. After all, that’s what these folks are here for.”

“But Dad, I already talked to the admissions office at the state school. Obviously, I don’t have it with me, but there’s a whole list of the undergrad prerequisites for all the major sciences. And all of the ones that’ll accept transfer credits are already noted. I know which classes I need to take here. We just don’t have the money for all of them yet. I could make up the rest before it’s time to move on to those last ones. Although, like we already discussed, it’s less about that and more about what comes after, when I’ve passed all of the courses that I could possibly get credit for here.”

He opened his door and calmly stepped out, shrugging his shoulders and gesturing toward the simple country school without any more reasons, excuses, or explanations.
